To date, static escape routes markings based on standardized threat scenarios are widely used. With this system, people are left without active assistance during the first minutes of "escape". Studies have shown that especially disabled and elderly people are facing disadvantages during emergency escapes. Likewise, complex infrastructures have increasingly become a problem factor. Another factor is the possibility of terrorist attacks that create complex emergency situations. In a case of emergency rapid situational awareness and appropriate response are central.
An essential measure in the event of an attack, a major accident or even at significant threat is to bring people out of the danger zone. RescueNet explored a new and innovative solution in the field of evacuation systems. The project made a strategic contribution to dynamic emergency management in critical infrastructures (such as an airport). RescueNet helped bring an Austrian prototype for flexible evacuation to the market by strengthening the innovative technical perfor-mance for the real-life applications, and answering questions concerning feasibility aspects, technology transfer, and standard generation. Sociological, psychological and legal aspects were examined. The system was demonstrated in cooperation with the Linz airport.
