Aim of development is a detection system for tracing hazardous and toxic volatile substances as personal protective equipment for task forces (first responder). The system to be developed is characterized by a price small enough to make the system affordable for all endangered on-site persons and also by its simplicity in usage, so that protection, especially for untrained personnel, is enhanced. Thus, it is clearly distinguishable from competitive systems as well.
Starting point is a sensor module developed by IMA, comprising a single semiconducting MOX-sensor element. This module will be extended by further MOX-elements and electrochemical cells as well. Thus, the detection system will be upgraded to be employable in a large number of application scenarios. A functional model for this system will be developed, assembled, and tested by experts from two demand carriers, namely the Federal Ministry of the Interior (Zivilschutzschule) and the Federal Ministry of Defence and Sports. The validation of technological aspects will be achieved on this functional model in live tests and under conditions of use. Gases to be detected range, for example, from toxic materials (TIMs), like carbon monoxide (CO), ammonia (NH3), hydrochloric acid (HCl), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) over pesticides to chemical warfare agents like mustard gas (HD), sarin (GB) or teargas (CS). TIMs will be tested in facilities provided by the demand carriers, for CWAs this can be only done in foreign facilities. Therefore, tests in Vyskov (Czech Republic) are planned as well, because this is essential for both demand carriers. By providing detection possibilities over this large range of chemicals (dual-use application), the detection system can be employed in several application relevant szenarios like accidents with hazardous substances, terrorristic threats or even arms control.
