Early-warning system for assessment of endangerment caused by landslides with respect to crucial infrastructure

The occurring change in earth climate leads to an increasing amount of landslide or mass-moving events with varying dimensions. Within the inner alpine regions, especially in Austria, a latent endangerment of critical infrastructure like streets or rails exists. Some examples from the past dramatically illustrate the hazard to the environment. To better protect Austria’s people and infrastructure, more powerful early-warning systems are required.

For a future realization of a comprehensive monitoring system, two aspects are investigated within this project:

1.) Technical aspect: The possibilities and limitations of a wireless sensor-network with GPS-based positioning have to be investigated. Furthermore, an energy-autarkic and maintenance-free set-up of the network has to be developed.

2.) Psychological aspects: It must be investigated how proper information has to be disseminated correctly amongst the community affected by a possible endangerment.
