ENERGY RISKS IN CITIES

Main objective of this project is a fundamental risk analysis regarding the different energy grids (natural gas, electricity, district heating) in Austrian urban areas

Main objective of this project is a fundamental risk analysis regarding the different energy grids (natural gas, electricity, district heating) in Austrian urban areas. This risk analysis includes all grid-based energy systems and networks available in cities (gas, electricity and district heating) and takes into account the interdependencies between the different infrastructures as well as the upstream transmission grids.

The key major outputs and expected results are:

• Systematization of risks associated with primary energy supply; quantitative modeling and scenario analysis for a number of possible intercontinental gas supply system options (pipeline systems, LNG terminals, storage facilities).

• Systematization of the interactions between the different urban distribution grids (natural gas, electricity, district heating) in the context of energy security.

• Quantitative modeling and scenario analysis for various infrastructure development options and system solutions in three selected urban areas regarding different risk scenarios.

• Analysis and ranking of various infrastructure development options and system solutions.

• Recommendations for prioritization of future infrastructure expansion projects and implementation of sustainable solutions in urban distribution grids.
