The project ‘dnatox’ consisted of three subprojects: (1) LC-MS of toxic compounds, (2) LC-MS of DNA, and (3) software development.
The subproject ‘LC-MS of toxic compounds’ focused on the development of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) workflows for the comprehensive identification of toxic agents. Tandem mass spectral data was used for compound identification. Reference spectra of >1000 compounds were acquired and stored in a database. A sophisticated algorithm enabled sensitive and specific library search.
The subproject ‘LC-MS of DNA’ focused on applications of LC/MS in forensic genetics. LC/MS was found to be particularly useful to genotype autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) marker. In comparison to conventional electrophoretic sizing, increased forensic discrimination was obtained due to the simultaneous differentiation of length and nucleotide variability.
In the subproject ‘software development’ tools for the automated, computer-assisted interpretation of mass spectral data were developed.
