The analysis of multimedia content, the reduction of the massive volumes of data into processable units and a holistic and transparent visualization of the results of the analysis (especially with respect to geographical positions) translates into tough challenges for intelligence services worldwide

The planning and preparation of terrorist attacks are no longer done solely in closed groups of activists, but rely on the Internet. Also lone operators with a need for approval use the Internet to get in touch with like-minded people. Furthermore, the ad-hoc documentation of events and incidents via mobile technologies like smartphones allow a nearly real-time publication of first-hand information (textual and multimedia). The analysis of this multimedia content, the reduction of the massive volumes of data into processable units and a holistic and transparent visualization of the results of the analysis (especially with respect to geographical positions) translates into tough challenges for intelligence services worldwide. In times of shrinking budgets and reduced personal resources, the development of “intelligent” algorithms allows a fast detection of threats, thus drastically improving the security in Austria. Furthermore, the collection, storing and subsequent enrichment of personal information, even if gathered from public sources, yields a plethora of technical and legal issues regarding data privacy. Methods and long-term archives have to be developed which ensure data privacy as well as personal rights of individuals while harvesting the needed information as well as allowing complex enrichment processes (with respect to the original context).
