Are night clubs, betting agencies or discotheques a threat for public security? Does closed circuit TV really help in preventing crimes? What is the impact of the number of on-ramps on the frequency of burglary? Questions like this occur frequently in strategic policing and often there is no satisfying answer available to those responsible. The study “BASE of ACE” is designed to make a substantial contribution to the objective investigation of possible causes of crime in Austria, as well as their quantification. The overall objective of the project was the formation of a data- and knowledge-base to predict regional differences in crimes in Austria. The scientific objective was the identification and quantification of basic conditions on criminality, which we denote by the term "impact factors". To serve this purpose it is necessary to enhance the availability of data on such factors. Further statistical models for the data analysis had to be developed, and finally the available data was analysed in an appropriate way.
