DigID – Study Digital Identity

Digital identities are an extension of our physical identities in the cyber space. The rapid technological development and the ever ubiquitous usage of digital identities in online activities raise many questions, to which the DigID study will provide answers. Starting with the basic question of how secure and reliable the current digital identity technologies and identity management systems are, further aspects like how the abuse and misuse of digital identities can be minimized, how current policy and legal framework should be adapted and prepared to enable and safeguard digital identities, and how to prepare Austrian society for the responsible and risk-aware use of multiple digital identities in the near future are investigated, to support decision makers for future planning. The DigID study will cover social, legal, organizational, and technical aspects of digital identity and identity management within the Austrian context, with special focus on (1) security of identity management systems, and (2) privacy and data protection of digital identities. Furthermore, the study will also investigate other topics that contribute to the successful deployment of digital identities such as public acceptance, traceability, transparency, usability, sustainability, compatibility, interoperability, openness and manageability. The results of the study will provide a roadmap for establishing a secure, trustworthy and reliable environment for digital identities in Austria. The duration of the DigID study is one year.
