Achilles heels in water infrastructure -Integrated concept for identification of weak points

One of the major tasks in urban water management is an operation without failures for at least most of the time. Accordingly, the reliability of the network systems is crucial in urban water management. A failure of a component in these systems impacts potable water distribution and urban drainage. Therefore, water distribution and urban drainage systems are categorized as critical infrastructure. The Achilles approach aims to map for weak points in the system. Thus it is possible to identify and prioritize critical components. That identification assists in creating safety plans for critical water infrastructure. With such plans, deficits can be identified and solved. Thus the approach significantly contributes to improve security and safety of citizens. Further, using this approach, also the risk of liability can be reduced for operators. With the Achilles approach an integrated concept for identification of such weak points in water infrastructure was developed.
